PIAA has just published a 2026 Preseason Bulletin for the upcoming cross country season. Two of the major points in it deal with a change to the rule regarding hats and the procedure for athletes using insulin pumps.
The hat modification to NFHS rules simply states that runners may now wear hats during any cross country or track and field competition. The hats can be baseball-style caps (worn forward or backward) or any other form-fitting cap. Hats with wider brims, like cowboy hats, will still not be allowed. Hats will also be restricted to a standard logo for the manufacturer or team, like other apparel.
The change in the procedure for insulin pumps removes PIAA from the process and simply calls for the school principal to approve the wearing of one for an athlete and to provide an approval letter that would be available to meet officials.
The complete text of the “bulletin” was sent to all registered track and field officials and can be read here.
